Post #26 – Women’s Memoirs, Author Conversations – Kendra Bonnett and Matilda Butler
Memoir writing isn’t an easy task. It takes mental and even physical endurance. One way to stay focused on the task is to know and believe in your message. Memoir author Leslie Gilbert-Lurie knew both the story she wanted to tell and the message she wanted to share through that story.
Kendra Bonnett and I had the privilege of interviewing Leslie about her approach to the writing process for her newly published memoir Bending Toward the Sun. We think her discussion of message, what you want the reader to take away from your memoir writing, will be helpful to you as you continue with your own writing. Questions asked by visitors to this blog were the basis of our interview. We know you’ll learn much from listening to Leslie Gilbert-Lurie’s interview below as she elaborated on her experiences with crafting her memoir and provided memoir writing tips. She answered questions about:
– How to incorporate your own changing view of your life into your memoir without constantly rewriting.
– How to make the best of negative comments about your story while you are writing.
– How to work with another family member on your memoir.
– What to do with research for your memoir.
– How and when you craft the opening to your memoir.
– And more.
