WRITING ALCHEMY is back as an intensive pre-conference seminar… with six hours for writing, sharing, discussion, and in-depth teaching.

We have developed two writing games to get your imagination sparked and your understanding fired up. Kendra Bonnett and I will equip you with unique and innovative writing tools that will make your words fairly explode with emotion, sensory detail, and energy. Whether writing personal history, memoir, company bios or fiction, Writing Alchemy ensures you always find the best way to tell a story. Our trademark Writing Alchemy process draws from social sciences and real-world observation to put you in control of the words and to help you craft beautifully written stories.

This is a hands-on session. We’ll use PowerPoint to introduce the concept of Writing Alchemy and take you through its 5 elements. You’ll have multiple opportunities to write and share with others in the pre-conference session. We’ll discuss how using each element changes the focus of our stories and even our understanding of the story we want to tell. After finishing the writing exercises, you’ll review the results to determine the strongest, most powerful elements for telling your story. You will leave equipped with the theory of Writing Alchemy and techniques for putting it to work. A fun and remarkably easy process, once you know how.

And What About that Memoir Early-Bird Rooster?

When Kendra and I discussed this post, she asked laughingly, “What are you using for a graphic? An Early Bird?” I replied, “No, I’m using a photo with three dice.”

Of course, as soon as we hung up, I went looking for a photo of an “Early Bird.” Since there isn’t such a thing, I decided to use a rooster, remembering a story from a couple of years ago. When I lived in California, our neighbor Julie had a rooster and beautiful, exotic hens that meandered her property, even in the front yard of her ten acres. The rooster often crowed at 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. or just about anytime that he felt like it. Since I often work late at night or even during the night, the rooster was simply an amusing facet of country life. Julie’s other neighbor eventually grew tired of this middle of the night crowing and said to her, “You’d better get that rooster an alarm clock that works or I will.” Loyde was a generous and wonderful neighbor, so I assume he was mostly teasing. However, Loyde didn’t like the “Early Bird” that awakened him when he preferred to sleep.

We promise that this Early-Bird Special Memoir Conference Price won’t crow in the wee hours of the morning. But, if you want to take advantage of the special, don’t wait past July 31 or you’ll find that the rooster is gone.
