As you probably know, Kendra and I are proud to be past IPPY (Independent Publisher Book Awards) winners for our collective memoir Rosie’s Daughters: The “First Woman To” Generation Tells Its Story.
Independent Publisher is a wonderful group that supports authors and small, independent publishers. If you are considering using a small publisher for your memoir or if you intend to publish the book yourself, then you definitely want to check out Independent Publisher and their yearly awards.
“I want a big-name publisher”
Still have it in your mind that you want to publish with one of the big commercial publishers? Good for you. There is no reason to not try to get their attention. Kendra likes to ask authors, “When was the last time you went to a bookstore and asked the clerk for the newest book from Simon & Schuster or got online with Amazon and said, ‘Oh look, it’s the latest book from HarperCollins?'”
Independent publishers are critical to publishing today. We urge you to consider them when you seek a publisher for your memoir.
