In her first, Mattson shares the engrossing story of her childhood spent as an orphan in San Francisco where her mother managed to send her in 1940, in the final window of opportunity for escaping the Nazi occupation of Vienna. Now she turns to quite a different period in her life — a year she spent teaching English in Jinan.
