Lavender for Joy and Devotion
Lavender, Lavandula, angustifolia
Lavender’s message is joy and devotion. Sometimes we get so involved in the “work” of a task that we forget the joy that it brings. Writing a memoir involves considerable mental work as well as long hours to organize, compose and edit the text. Let the lavender growing in our Memoir Garden serve as the reminder that there is a joyful side to our devotion to this undertaking.
The word lavender, by the way, is derived from the Latin lavare that means “to wash.” Centuries ago in England, if your occupation was washing clothes, you were called a lavender. About the only connection between then and now is that the plant’s lovely scent is used in soaps. I grow lavender and in the Spring stretch comforters and quilts across the plants for a few hours. When I bring them back inside, they smell extra sweet.
Although used by herbalists for hundreds of years, there is now scientific research that demonstrates the antiseptic and healing properties of lavender flowers. They have a complex essential oil that has been shown to lift the spirit, easing mild cases of anxiety.
The gentle wind blowing across our Memoir Garden brings the scent of lavender as a reminder to enjoy the process of memoir writing.
