Not all of our notes to family and friends can be equally joyful. But the card, in itself, can affirm that joy, like love, will always be with us. Embedded in the translucent cover of each card is an actual sprig of lavender from my herb garden here on Cielo Hill.

As you may know, lavender is commonly used in aromatherapy as a mood enhancer. I have my own reason for associating lavender with joy. Only when I began to grow English lavender in my herb garden did I realize how briefly it blooms. Each year I wait 11 months for the glorious moment in mid-May when the lavenders’ gorgeous blooms reappear and its scent pervades the garden. Then it’s my delight to pick and press the lavender daily, remembering that its season will soon be over. During its long dormancy, the lavender bed is bare and trimmed, but it reminds me of the joy that will return each year.

Beauty in nature is a joy, and joy that we share with other people is beautiful. On each note card, a sprig of Cielo Hill lavender testifies to these essential truths.
