Post #23 – Women’s Memoirs, Author Conversations – Kendra Bonnett and Matilda Butler
How did a story about losing the custody of her young son become a story about learning to listen to her inner whisperings? In our interview with author Karen Walker, she begins by telling us about the hundreds of journals she has written since 1978, when, at the age of 28, she lost custody of her child.
Karen goes on to explain that while journaling probably saved her life, writing a memoir is quite a different process. Learn, along with us, about Karen’s life journey and her writing journey.
Here are a few of the questions we asked:
- How do you take a personal story and give it a universal theme that many understand?
- What was your motivation in writing your memoir?
- What tools or techniques kept you motivated during the writing of your memoir?
- What is the Golden Thread and how can other writers use it to organize their memoir?
- What role do you think an editor has in helping an author with her memoir?
- What was your experience in looking for a publisher?
- What are you doing about the marketing of your memoir?
- And more…
Listen below as Karen shares with us her experiences in writing her memoir as well as the wisdom she has gained over the years in learning how to follow the whispers.

Could you please tell me how to take Danni’s class that you mention in your wonderful interview. After hearing you, I am going to order your book to read. I’m finished with my memoir and ready for it to be printed and our subjects are similar.
I just have to learn what you learned with Danni.
Thanks,
Judy
HI Judy,
Thank you for wanting to read my book, and congratulations on finishing yours. Best of luck with the publishing and marketing. Dani’s class is an online course found at http:www.bookblogtours.com. But I do believe she is on hiatus right now.
