Memoir Writing in the Year of the Dragon

storytelling-dragon, memoir, memoir writing conference, writing conference, journalingBy now, you know that this is the Chinese Year of the Dragon, a mythological symbol that represents, among other things, immortality and happiness. What does that have to do with memoir writing? Well, as far as I can tell, writing our memoirs allows us to have one type of immortality — stories that last longer than we do.

It also seems that the Chinese Dragon is known to keep evil spirits at bay. Surely that is the same as scaring away those wicked twins, Writers’ Block and Self-Doubt.

So, 2012 should be a great year for writers.

With the Dragon Covering our Back, We Can Focus on Learning and Writing

Story Circle Network, a wonderful organization that we’ve frequently mentioned, is sponsoring its bi-annual conference Stories From the Heart VI that will be held in Austin, Texas from April 13-15, 2012.

Story Circle “is dedicated to helping women share the stories of their lives and to raising public awareness of the importance of women’s personal histories.” Through their many activities, SCN supports the empowerment of all women so that they can “choose to be the authors of their own lives.”

Then REGISTER NOW. Conference prices go up February 15.

The conference will bring women from around the country to celebrate the stories of our lives and learn valuable lifewriting skills. Join us as we welcome readers, writers, storytellers, and any woman with a past, present, and future. — “Stories From the Heart VI” Conference e-Letter

Kendra and I will be at the conference along with other incredible presenters. We’re pleased to be teaching a pre-conference workshop — It’s 10 pm, Do You Know Where Your Story Is? Seven Steps to Successful Story Structure (limited enrollment so sign up as soon as you can) as well as two of the many conference workshops. We’ve also been asked to participate in the one-on-one Heart-to-Heart coaching (also limited spaces available).

The conference program offers a wide selection of workshops, panel discussions, and presentations, all focussed on women’s memoir. Participants will learn how to use personal narrative as a healing art, how to gather and use their memories, and how to tell their lifestories.– “Stories From the Heart VI” Conference e-Letter

Sharing What You Have Written with Other Women Lifewriters

SCN’s Stories from the Heart conference also is offering an Open Mic.

If you have a piece of life writing to share, the Stories from the Heart Conference Open Mic is the perfect opportunity. Conference attendees are invited to bring a piece of their writing to read during “Open Mic,” Saturday, April 14. — “Stories From the Heart VI” Conference e-Letter
