Writing and Healing: One Woman’s Story
One of our readers, in telling us about how she found our website, mentioned that she has been writing about her father in a way that is healing for her. Here’s what Mary Thompson said:
“I was looking for a writing journal for my brother for Christmas, so I was searching the Internet and came across your website. My brother is a writer, and encourages me to do so, as well.
“My father has Parkinson’s disease, and it has been a very hard transition for him. Out of the five children in our family (now in our 40’s) I have always been the closest to my father and it has been a grieving process for me as well. I wrote about this, although I do not know if it would be considered a memoir, and allowed just my brother to read it. He told me he had to take a 24 hour break before he could read it again because of the emotion it pulled from him.
“I wrote to get it out of my head because the pain of it all rattling around in there started to change me as a person each time I saw my father. I grew more solemn, laughed less, and cried more. Writing allowed me to purge all the poisons and make sense of things just a little bit more.”
