Journaling Inspiration
Did you know that art is a wonderful source of inspiration for journaling? When you’re tired of writing the same things over and over again, using art to inspire your journal writing may be the answer.
Art Inspires and Informs Journaling as well as Memoir
Art, in the broadest terms, can include photography, paintings, mixed-media, sculpture, textiles, architecture, quilts, and more. When looking to art for journaling inspiration, select work that evokes an emotional response, such as sadness, awe, joy, or anger. The stronger the emotions, the better. This is because emotion is linked to memory. The stronger the emotions that are evoked, the more likely it is that the work of art will help you to reflect deeply about the way you respond to life’s events and circumstances.
Visit Museums and Galleries for Writing Inspiration
While viewing art online can work, I suggest making the time to visit a museum or an art/photography gallery in your area. The impact of the actual work will always be greater than a small digital image. And taking the time to nurture yourself in this way just plain feels good.
Art Inspired Journaling Prompts for Memoir Writers
- What feelings does the art evoke? What memory or memories do you associate with these feelings? Write about any associations you have with the emotions.
- In what ways does the art relate to your life?
- Word association. With the art in mind (it’s helpful if you can have it in front of you), write the first word that comes into your mind as you look at it or think about it. Continue to write words that you associate with the art as they come to you. When you can’t think of any more words, look at the list you’ve created and write about any patterns that you notice.
- What does the art say to you (what message do you receive from it)? Explore this as deeply as possible.
