Memoir writer Susan ParkerIn February of this year, Kendra and I interviewed memoirist Susan Parker, published her guest blog and writing prompt, and posted Michelle Rockwell’s review of her book, Walking in the Deep End. Recently, we saw a list she developed called the Secrets of Resilient People and thought we’d share it with you.

But let me back up in case you don’t know Parker’s memoir. In her book, she writes about her dysfunctional family, her father’s suicide, her own bulimia, religious hypocrisy, marriage, divorce and finally finding an inner peace.

Parker provides insights into the process of personal discovery. As she says, “To be happy, you must be authentic and shame-free. Living authentically means realizing you don’t need to be perfect, you just need to be the best you can be—today.”

Here’s her Secrets of Resilient People

  • They tweak their expectations and bend and adjust as life flows and changes
  • They stay true to themselves
  • They are life-long learners
  • They stay connected to others
  • They can laugh at themselves and at life
  • They give back to society
  • They live in gratitude and are generally optimistic
  • They are spiritual and recognize that their beliefs might just change/adapt/evolve
  • They know how to pick their battles
  • They value mental, physical, and spiritual health, doing what they can to stay healthy
  • They find the silver lining and learn from whatever happens
