Post #9 – Women’s Memoirs, Writing Prompt – Kendra Bonnett and Matilda Butler
Written by: Promptly Portland
Today, I waded in the DesChutes River while I tried to force myself to swim into the mildly strong current. It was your classic “don’t be such a wimp” compulsion. I knew that navigating the current wouldn’t be the smartest thing I’d ever done, but it also certainly–hopefully–wouldn’t kill me.
I’ll save you the suspense: I chickened out (the water was really cold). However, while I stood there, the water rushing past my shaking knees, I thought of all the seriously more dangerous stuff I had done: surfing massive waves, walking primitive treetop wood bridges hundreds of feet over the jungle floor, riding my bike at ungodly speeds down steep hills, climbing a tree 60 feet in the air and jumping off with only a rope and harness between me and a nasty fall to earth, eating shrimp with the full knowledge that I would get very sick (they just taste so good). Okay, so I haven’t lived the most thrilling life, but like everyone else, I have faced fear in some form or another.
What about you? What fears have you faced?
500 Words (or More): Memoir Writing Prompt
Write about a time when you stared fear right in the face. It doesn’t really matter if you overcame the fear or not. Plenty of our personal growth comes from knowing what we shouldn’t or can’t do. How did the experience change you? How do you deal with fear now? Be sure to write out the scene thoroughly. Don’t leave out details or context from that one specific moment in your life.
Until next time,
