Post #3 – Memoir Writing, Journaling – Amber Starfire
In her famous diary, Anne Frank wrote:
Sometimes I very much doubt whether in the future anyone will be interested in all my tosh. “The unbosomings of an ugly duckling” will be the title of all this nonsense.
Never, in her wildest dreams, could Anne Frank have imagined that her “tosh” would speak to millions. Most of us imagine that our lives are ordinary. After all, every day we breathe and sleep and eat much as anyone else. If we live long enough, we all experience childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. We all have families, problems, pains, and joys. So, we think, why should we bother to write any of it down?
Here’s why: each and every one of us has a unique perspective and a unique story to tell.
Daily Inspiration Writing Prompts:
• Make a list of all the ways your life is ordinary. Now, make a list of all the ways your life is not ordinary — what makes your life and experience different (extraordinary) from others’?
• Select one word from your “ordinary” list, and use it to finish the following sentences: “__________ is ordinary because ….” and “What I love about __________ is …..”
• Now select one word from your “not ordinary” list, and use it to finish the following sentences: “_________ is extraordinary because ….” and “What I love about ___________ is ….”
Relax, and take your time to write about each of your “ordinary” and “extraordinary” activities. Pick a word from each column to write about during one journaling session, and give yourself the luxury of spontaneity and reflection.
