Memoir Writing: Think About Your Life

Memoir writing is a time to reflect on your life. Your look backwards but the result is you better understand your past and so that you can move forward into your future with new insights.

Because memoir writing is usually a multi-year project, it is great to have a few exercises along the way that help you analyze your contentment with your life. Then you can think about your need to stay the course or revise the way you are living your life.

Today’s memoir writing prompt is one of these quick exercises designed to take you deeper into your life reflections.

Memoir Writing Prompt

1. Type or write the phrase:

Today I want to

and then complete it. Write what you want to do today. If you write something like, “Today I want to have the wonderful life I currently have,” then you are content with your goals and your progress toward them. At the other extreme, if you write something like, “Today I want to do anything other than what I am doing,” you definitely are unhappy.

I don’t know what your response will be. In the middle? Near one of these two polarized statements? What matters is that you evaluate where you are now, how happy you are with what you are doing with your life. Write for up to 10 minutes about the current state of your life. Look inside you — not the outside states.

2. After you complete the first prompt, consider writing for another 10 minutes about how you can change just one thing today to bring you closer to being the person you want to be. Happiness comes from inside us, not from the outside. Begin right now creating a happier and healthier you. All it takes is moving forward one step at a time.

Writing can help you see what you want to do with your life and help you keep track of your progress.
