Post #9 – Women’s Memoirs, Book Business – Kendra Bonnett and Matilda Butler
Ever since we wrote the collective memoir Rosie’s Daughters: The “First Women To” Generation Tells Its Story and put the iconic Rosie the Riveter on the cover, we’ve been sensitized to uses of the image. And the fact is, they are everywhere. I love it when I mention Rosie the Riveter to a young woman, and she immediately replies, “I love Rosie the Riveter; she’s all about empowerment!”
That's me. I must have been about a year and a half when I was first introduced to the iconic Rosie look.
We Can Do It!
Rosie’s motto “We Can Do It!” does speak to the empowerment of women, but there’s more to it—that empowerment is rooted in heightened self-esteem and self-confidence. We really can do it.
Shortly after our book came out, Matilda and I felt we needed a tangible reminder of the legacy that Rosie and Rosie’s Daughters have given all women. While a tee-shirt was the most obvious idea, we felt that re-creating Rosie the Riveter on yet another shirt wasn’t the message we were looking for. And that’s when we really studied at Rosie and realized that the icon was all about the bandana. In the stylized illustrations and actual photos of wartime factories, the Rosies all have one thing in common—their bandana.

We’re proud of our Rosie the Riveter Legacy Bandana, now in its Limited Edition III printing. We can’t think of a better way to tell the world You Can Do It, Too! Wear it to say you are a strong woman. Give it to your daughter or granddaughter as a reminder to be confident and maintain her own high self-esteem.
Last year, we were surprised when women started buying the bandana to accessorize their Halloween costumes. But in fact, what a great idea to dress as Rosie the Riveter. This year we are prepared with enough official Rosie the Riveter bandanas to accessorize an army of Rosies. There’s plenty of time to get yours in time for Halloween.
