Memoir Writing Tiny Tip #16
These Memoir Writing Tiny Tips are meant to be brief. Sometimes the words just take over. But today I promise to make this idea short.
In the title, I say this is something every writer needs. What is that? Oh sure, you need a story to tell, the patience to learn about effective writing, and the time to explore and reflect on your life.
But there is something that every writer needs and many neglect acquiring…A cheering squad.
Every writer gets down at times. A cheering squad really helps. But even when you are managing to struggle on and you still have your chin held high, a cheering squad lets you know that your hard work is paying off. That you should continue. That the journey is worth the time and energy.
How do you get a cheering squad?
It’s different for each person. Sometimes a good friend, a partner, a sister writer (or a real sister), a memoir teacher or coach, etc. The who is up to you. How many do you want on your cheering squad? That is also up to you. Some people like having several people who can be called on to react to an idea, to read and provide feedback, to just lend moral support to your effort. Others just want one or two people.
Today’s tip is to get you thinking about your cheering squad. Their role is to lift you up so that you can better see the value of what you are doing.
How This Tiny Tip Series Started
The idea for a series of short writing tips came to me while reading the program notes for a chamber music concert. I realized that many (well, ok, most) of my blog articles get to be long and often require you to do certain things — like write from prompts I’ve provided. And while I will continue with this type of longer article because I think they are of value, I realized that sometimes as writers we just want a little bit of information or a small new idea or a thought stated differently. We don’t have a lot of time.
That’s the concept behind each Tiny Tip. Just a nugget to give you something to think about as you go through your busy day.
Enjoy.
