Memoir Writing in the Sky

memoir, memoir writing, journaling, memoir writing prompts, writing promptNo. I haven’t decided to write my memoir in the sky. But I do have a writing prompt for you that came to me while watching fireworks this year.

As you may have noticed from previous posts, my partner and I took our six- and eight-year-old grandchildren (and their parents) to Disneyland for their first visit. We all arrived at our Anaheim hotel on July 4th and then left to return home on July 7th.

memoir writing prompts, memoir, autobiography, journaling, memoir writingI know it seems a bit late in July to mention fireworks. However, watching the most amazing display in the sky over Disneyland Park, I felt inspired to share an idea with you.

Disney is the master of pyrotechnics. They have a talented staff and have developed unique fireworks. They have even created four new colors not ordinarily found in fireworks — mint green, lavender, lagoon blue, and pumpkin orange.

As I looked up at the dark sky, ablaze with the evening’s display of fireworks, I was amazed at the sight. We’ve all seen fireworks and know what to expect. However, I’ve never seen fireworks that burst into specific shapes such as stars. At one point the shape was a Mickey Mouse head with the two Mickey Mouse ears. Such an iconic shape. Perhaps most unusual was a red heart.

At first, I wondered what shape I would request if I could have a fireworks display designed for me. A tree? Mount St. Helens? (I do live in Oregon now.) Then my mind wandered on to words. If you could create a shape such as heart, perhaps you could get a sentence to display in the sky.

Here’s your writing challenge for the day.

Memoir Writing Prompt:

1. What if you could put a message into fireworks that would explode in the sky. Let’s say you are told you can have six words. What sentence would you let explode in the sky? Is the message for another person? Is it the theme of your memoir?

This is a fun prompt. Put it in your mind and think about it during the day. What six words would you want the world to know about your life? Then tonight, write those six words and imagine handing the piece of paper to a Disney employee who will fire it off into the sky. Who do you want standing next to you when your sentence explodes in the dark blue sky?
