These are great stories! While toughskins will never come back into fashion, I did buy a pair of yellow jeans from the Gap in the early '90s. And green, too!

One addition: that fish we created for Grandaddy Ed was made from plaster. We did make the mold in sand, like the candles we made many of, but for this we placed seashells in the sand and then poured in plaster. Your dad had it in the garden area outside his room hanging on the wall, and 26 years later when we were gathered for his funeral, I walked around their house and found that it had mostly dissolved in the elements, but there were still a few pieces of it, with shells embedded, sitting below where it had hung. It was sweet seeing that your father didn't just get rid of it after a few years as it weathered away, but instead left it up to age as it would.

Seeing these photos remind me of fun times past, and make me thankful for the present days I have with my family, creating memories for their future.

Here it is Jan. 1 and I'm looking through your site. This writing prompt really speaks to me. This holiday was especially hard for me as it is the first one since my mother died. I am going to channel some of my sadness into writing about a special holiday with her.
Thanks again.

Jamie: It seems we put extra pressure on our holidays. We want and expect each one to be perfect. Of course, they rarely are. If the same situation happened on an ordinary day, we could probably handle it better.

When our middle son was young, he was always sick on his birthday. Even now, at a point in his life when he has small children, we talk about those birthdays. I suppose is was simply a matter of too much anticipation.

Kendra and I hope that you have a wonderful 2010. If there is anyway that we can help you this year, please let us know.

Having weathered a dismal Christmas and remembering from an old slide how much fun they could be for an only child and only grandchild, I feel a need to take both prompts and do the 250. I wrote a story about the Christmas Eve party at church when a lady dropped dead. The story had a funny twist while also being the "honest" telling of the story by a disgruntled narrator. Memoir is a beautiful gift we give to ourselves as well as others.

CJ, I was never a big fan of my dancing doll. She was bigger than me and always wanted to lead!

Love the memories--I'd forgotten all about dancing dolls. Ahhhhhhhh, Christmas seemed so much better back then.

Hi Kate:
Thanks for the link to your blog and memoir poem. No matter our age, we are still rooted in our childhood experiences and memories.

Glad you like our writing prompt.
