Post #96 – Memoir Writing News – Kendra Bonnett and Matilda Butler
Writing Alchemy: How to Write Fast and Deep garners the top spot for nonfiction at the 45th Annual Conference and Writing Contest of the Oklahoma Writers’ Federation Inc (OWFI). And this is after earning an honorable mention at the New England Book Festival (December 2012).
Matilda was in Norman, Oklahoma, this past week to attend and present at the 45th Annual OWFI Conference. OWFI draws its members from Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Arkansas, and their annual event pulls in hundreds of attendees…not to mention the number of members who submit their work to the annual writing contest.
OWFI represents such a broad base of writers, that entries are divided into 29 different categories for unpublished work (ranging from mainstream novel to historical to nonfiction to inspirational to poetry…something for just about everyone) and 4 for published books (nonfiction, fiction, juvenile and poetry).
After teaching a Writing Alchemy workshop to a packed room on Friday afternoon and reading a few excerpts from Rosie’s Daughters (2nd Edition) on Saturday, Matilda attended the awards banquet Saturday evening. “The ballroom was big and it was filled with writers. There must have been 300 people in attendance,” says Matilda. “When OWFI 1st Vice President, Sonia Gensler, announced Writing Alchemy to be the nonfiction winner, I was thrilled.”
Matilda and I are honored to be the recipient of 2013 Best Nonfiction Book Award. And we want to thank OWFI for its hospitality and the opportunity to present Writing Alchemy to its members.
UPDATE: We just heard today, May 7th, that Writing Alchemy is a Finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards (Education/Academic category).
