It’s September and Time to Announce our Memoir Contest Winners

Labor Day evokes memories for almost everyone. As a child it meant school days were back. While I loved summer with its freedom and bike riding, swimming, picnics with the sweet sticky watermelon juice running down my arm and — well — just being a kid, I was always excited to see the return of classes. As I reached high school age, I also learned the important news that a “lady” never wore white after Labor Day. (There was something complicated about that rule since it turned out that it was all right to wear white beginning in late December and through early February. But that’s not the point of this blog.)

As the nation celebrates with family and friends, Women’s Memoirs is also celebrating by announcing our memoir contest winners. We’re pleased to present the winners of our seventh memoir writing contest for 2011. The theme was Labor Day or being in labor or entering the labor force. You get the idea.

Kendra Bonnett and I were amazed at the large number of women who sent us their memoir contest entries. It seems that the theme evoked lots of memories. We have entries both from women who have entered before and from women who have entered for the first time. As you read stories by our contest winners, you may think, “Hey. I’ve got a great story I want to share. Maybe I’ll enter a contest.” And yes, please do enter. You’ll find the list of the rest of this year’s contests on our website.

The entries this month both surprised and pleased us. They were fun to read and we hope you’ll enjoy those we’ve selected as winners. This afternoon, we’ll publish our Grand Winner and later in the year we’ll publish the others.

Note: Submitted a story but didn’t win this month? Kendra and I want you to know that we appreciate your contest entry. Submitting a story always takes us out of our comfort zone. You should feel good that you did enter. We hope you will enter one of our future contests. There are numerous topics in the coming contests. For the complete list, go to: http://WomensMemoirs.com/contests.
