Thyme for Energy

Thyme, Thymus vulgaris

Thyme’s message is energy. Writing is just one endeavor among many in our lives — family, friends, home, and work also occupy us. Perhaps we have health concerns or financial difficulties. Whatever our load, it often seems heavy. Thyme is our energy reminder. Writing a memoir requires hours, days, months, even years. We have to prioritize and then concentrate energy in order to accomplish this important undertaking.

Thyme was used at least 5000 years ago. Records show that the Sumerians used it as an antiseptic around 3000 BCE. Other research indicates that the embalming of pharaohs in ancient Egypt involved the use of thyme. The Greeks used this herb in baths as well as in their temples where it was burnt as incense. The ancient Romans are said to have purified rooms with it and also to have associated it with energy, courage, and strength.

In my garden, I’ve planted about a dozen of the more than 100 varieties. In addition to the popular French thyme, I’ve had Lemon, Lime, Silver, Caraway, Coconut, Creeping, Wooley, and others I can no longer recall their names. These aren’t showy plants. Their tiny leaves are only 1/8″ long and 1/16″ wide. But they pack a lot of flavor punch into their small size. I dry bunches of the French thyme, the one that seems to like my soil the best, and value its addition to my Cielo Hill herb mix – oregano, parsley, calendula, and a bit of sage. I hand crush this mixture into salad dressings and on sprinkle on freshly cooked vegetables.

When our energy sags, and it will, we can let our minds wander to the Memoir Garden and seek out the thyme plants. They’re waiting to renew our sense of energy.
